At GVA, we believe:

That assessment is a tool for feedback, reflection, and collaboration that supports student growth.

Why It Matters

At GVA, we believe assessment should help students grow, not simply measure where they stand. The purpose of assessment is not to label students or reduce learning to a number; it is to provide meaningful feedback that guides next steps for students, teachers, and families.

When assessment is used well, it becomes part of the learning process itself. It helps students recognize their strengths, identify areas for growth, reflect on their progress, and develop ownership of their learning. It also helps teachers adjust instruction, provide targeted support, and better understand how students are thinking.

Assessment is most powerful when it is ongoing, collaborative, and focused on growth rather than comparison. Students learn best when they receive clear feedback, opportunities to improve, and encouragement to reflect on both their successes and challenges.

At GVA, we want students to see assessment not as something that happens to them, but as something that helps them move forward.

Here we get an inside look at a student led parent-teacher conference at GVA Modesto. This practice helps ensure students are front and center in the learning process and able to speak to their personal learning goals and progress.

What We Prioritize

Feedback That Guides Growth: Students receive clear, actionable feedback that helps them improve and deepen understanding.

Reflection and Goal Setting: Students are encouraged to think about their progress, recognize growth, and set meaningful learning goals.

Assessment as Part of Learning: Checks for understanding, discussion, practice, and revision are woven into daily instruction.

Collaboration Between School and Home: Assessment information helps teachers, studetns, and families work together to support learning.

Multiple Ways to Demonstrate Learning: Students may show understanding through discussion, projects, writing, problem-solving, and performance - not just tests.

Growth Over Comparison: We focus on individual progress and continued improvement rather than ranking students against one another.

Let's Make This Belief a Reality

Help your child see assessment as an opportunity to learn and grow rather than something to fear. When reviewing grades, assignments, or feedback, focus conversations on progress, effort, and next steps instead of simply asking, "What score did you get?"

Encourage your child to reflect by asking questions like:

  • "What  did you learn from this?"

  • "What are you improving at?"

  • "What might you try differently next time?"

When students view feedback as helpful rather than judgmental, they become more resilient, reflective, and motivated learners.

Together, we can help children develop the confidence to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and continue growing over time.

Talk With Us!

Think about a time when feedback helped you improve at something important.

What made that feedback helpful? How can we create similar experiences that encourage your child to reflect, grow, and keep trying?
